AP CSP helped shape my thinking by considering the implications of anything online. This includes design intent, copyright laws, and digital censorship bias. The following topics were covered throughout this course:

  • Data privacy
  • Algorithmic bias
  • IP rights and fair use
  • The digital divide

Each of these topics influence my actions online. Though I understood aspects of these topics prior to the class, discussing them in the same context is quite helpful. Learning about algorithmic bias has made me wary of bias in underlying data, even if statistics or graphs portray the data accurately. Being able to connect this information with the digital divide, I can be more cautious of data bias in more than just computer science.

Data privacy

  • Importance of multi factor authentication
  • Identify online risks such as phishing attacks
  • Knowledge of data encryption types, TLS
  • Personally identifiable information

Algorithmic bias

  • Ability to identify cases of data bias
  • Addressing human biases in datasets
  • The correlation between human bias and diversity

IP rights and fair use

  • Copyright law as a protector of authors’ works
  • Trademarks as an IP
  • Fair use and Creative Commons licenses as a way to properly use IPs (see below image)
  • Piracy and plagiarism and their repercussions

The digital divide

  • A contributor to data bias
  • Seen alongside wealth inequality
  • Ways to reduce the divide by providing access to resources
